CA Foundation Syllabus: Every Paper, Explained
CA Foundation is the entry level of the Chartered Accountancy course with ICAI - the gateway you sit after Class 12. It is four papers wide, and this page maps each one plainly, so you can see the whole starting level before you plan your reading.
1The four papers, at a glance
Two are answered in the descriptive (subjective) format and two are objective (MCQ) papers - the mix is part of what makes Foundation a good test of both writing and speed.
Accounting
The foundation of financial accounting: the accounting process from journal to ledger to final accounts, bank reconciliation, partnership and the basics of company accounts. A subjective paper - practise writing full solutions, not just reading them.
★ High yield - build this firstBusiness Laws
The core commercial laws a future CA must know - contract, sale of goods, partnership and LLP, and the basics of company law. Law is periodically amended, so study the applicable version rather than old notes. A subjective paper that rewards precise, worded answers.
Quantitative Aptitude
Three strands in one paper: Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics - ratios, interest, equations, sequences, reasoning puzzles and data handling. An objective (MCQ) paper, so accuracy under the clock is the skill to build.
Business Economics
How markets and the economy work - demand and supply, forms of market, national income and money, and the broad shape of the Indian economy. An objective (MCQ) paper that rewards clear concepts over rote lines.
2What to focus on - and what to avoid
Foundation rewards steady practice in both formats - descriptive writing and quick, accurate MCQs.
Work the ICAI material
The Study Material, RTPs, MTPs and past papers are the closest thing to the real exam. Solve them fully rather than only reading through.
Time your MCQ papers
Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics are objective. Regular timed practice builds the speed and accuracy those papers reward.
Guessing blindly on MCQs
Objective papers reward accuracy, and the marking scheme can penalise wrong answers. Confirm the current pattern, including any negative marking, on icai.org.
Studying an old law edition
Business Laws is amended over time. Working from outdated notes quietly costs marks - always use the applicable version for your attempt.
3How to prepare - a simple rhythm
A general order many students follow. Adapt the length of each phase to your own timeline.
