CBSE Class 1 Syllabus: What Your Child Will Learn This Year
Class 1 is your child's first proper school year - and it is all about falling in love with learning, not exams. Here is the whole CBSE Class 1 syllabus at a glance: the four subjects, what each one gently builds, and simple ways you can help at home.
1The four subjects, at a glance
CBSE Class 1 keeps it simple and joyful. Here is what each subject covers over the year.
English
Capital and small letters, letter sounds (phonics), simple two and three letter words, common sight words, short rhymes and picture stories, and reading a simple sentence. The goal is confident letter-sounds and a love of storybooks.
Hindi
Recognising and writing swar and vyanjan (vowels and consonants), simple words, gentle introduction to matras, and lots of poems (kavitayein) and picture-word play. Sound and recognition come first, neat writing follows.
Mathematics
Counting and writing numbers (starting 1-20, growing through the year), before/after/between, flat shapes, patterns, comparing (big/small, more/less), simple addition and subtraction, and everyday ideas of length, weight, time and money. Numbers through real objects, not rote.
General Knowledge
Myself and my family, parts of the body, good habits and manners, animals and their homes, plants and food, seasons and festivals, colours, and community helpers. The world around your child, made curious.
2How to help at home
You do not need to be a teacher. A few small habits do most of the work.
Read together, every day
Ten minutes of a picture book builds vocabulary and love of reading faster than any worksheet.
Count real things
Count stairs, spoons, biscuits. Everyday maths sticks far better than numbers on a page.
Don't rush neat writing
Little hands need time. Sound and recognition first; tidy handwriting comes with practice.
Don't compare children
Every child blooms on their own clock. Celebrate small wins and keep it playful.
3How the year flows
A gentle rhythm most schools follow - use it to know what to support when.
- 1
First term - settling in
- Letters and sounds, numbers 1-20, colours and shapes.
- At home: daily read-aloud and counting games.
- 2
Middle of the year - building
- Simple words and sentences, bigger numbers, add and subtract, festivals and seasons.
- At home: label things around the house; play shop with coins.
- 3
Final term - putting it together
- Reading short stories, writing simple words, patterns and measurement, the world around us.
- At home: let your child read a page to you and tell you about it.
Tap to reveal - a relaxed sense of where your child is.
Can your child recognise and say most letter sounds?Reveal
If yes, they are on track for reading. If not, short daily sound games (not writing drills) are the fastest, happiest way to get there.
Can they count a small group of objects correctly?Reveal
Counting real objects up to ten or twenty is the Class 1 heart of maths - it matters far more than writing numbers neatly at this age.
Does your child enjoy story time?Reveal
Enjoyment is the real Class 1 syllabus. A child who loves books will carry that through every year that follows.
