Stage 2
Between Foundation and Final

1Group 1 - the four papers

Law, accounting, tax and costing - the technical core.

1

Business Laws and Ethics

The laws that govern companies and commerce, together with professional ethics. Precise wording wins marks - learn the definitions and key sections as they are stated.

2

Financial Accounting

Preparing and presenting financial statements at a deeper level than Foundation, including accounting standards and special transactions. Work full problems - accounting rewards practice, not reading.

3

Direct and Indirect Taxation

One paper covering both sides of tax: income tax (direct) as it applies to individuals and businesses, and GST and customs (indirect). Tax changes often - always study the version applicable to your attempt.

4

Cost Accounting

How costs are captured, classified and controlled - the discipline at the heart of the CMA qualification. This is your signature subject; build it thoroughly here.

2Group 2 - the four papers

Operations, corporate accounting, finance and management accounting.

1

Operations Management and Strategic Management

Running operations efficiently and setting the direction of a business. Link theory to real examples - the concepts stick far better when you can picture them.

2

Corporate Accounting and Auditing

Accounting for companies - shares, amalgamation and consolidation - together with the principles of auditing. Accounting plus assurance in one paper, so split your practice across both.

3

Financial Management and Business Data Analytics

Managing funds, investment and financing decisions, plus using data to inform them. Formulas need interpretation - know what each number is telling you, not just how to compute it.

4

Management Accounting

Using accounting information for planning, decisions and control - budgeting, standard costing and performance analysis. The bridge to the Final papers, so make the concepts solid.

3What to focus on - and what to avoid

Two groups reward a plan, not last-minute cramming.

Decide your group strategy early

Whether you attempt both groups together or one at a time, plan it up front so your revision has a clear shape.

Keep tax current

The taxation paper follows a specific applicable period. Study the version notified for your attempt, not older notes.

Neglecting the practical papers

Accounting and costing need worked problems every week. Reading them the night before rarely holds up in the exam.

Treating theory papers as easy

Law, ethics and strategy still need structured answers. Vague recall loses the marks that precise points would earn.

Power move: make cost and management accounting your strongest area - it is the CMA identity, and depth here carries straight into the Final strategic-cost papers.

4How to prepare - a phased approach

A general rhythm you can adapt to your own timeline.

  • 1

    Foundation of concepts

    • Read each paper once and map the syllabus so you know the terrain.
    • Checkpoint: you can name the core topics in every paper.
  • 2

    Practical drilling

    • Work accounting, costing, tax and financial-management problems regularly.
    • Checkpoint: you can solve a full sum in each practical paper unaided.
  • 3

    Answer structure for theory

    • Practise writing crisp, pointed answers in law, ethics and strategy.
    • Checkpoint: your answers lead with the rule, then the application.
  • 4

    Revision and mocks

    • Revise in cycles and sit full-length mocks per group under time.
    • Checkpoint: your timing and accuracy are steady across both groups.
