Bank Overdraft – Cash Equivalent or Financing? A small concept, but a very common exam mistake. Many students assume that a bank overdraft is always financing. That’s not correct. Its classification depends on how it is used. When is it a Cash Equivalent? If the bank balance frequently moves between positive and negative, and the overdraft is used for day-to-day cash management, then it is treated as part of Cash & Cash Equivalents. It is simply helping maintain liquidity. When is it Financing? If the overdraft is taken specifically for borrowing, and behaves like a structured loan for a particular purpose, then it is classified as a Financing Activity.
