PART 1: Why Are AI’s Fastest Racers Asking for Brakes?

AI is dangerous. We’ve heard that argument many times. But if the risks were already known, why are some of the same people who helped accelerate the AI race now calling for tighter regulation, slower development and stronger guardrails? That is where second-order thinking becomes useful. Regulation may reduce risk, but it can also change competition, raise barriers for newer players and strengthen the position of companies that are already ahead. The real debate is not only about safety, but also about incentives, control and who gets to shape what comes next. So the better question may not be just, “Is AI dangerous?” It may be, “What happens after we decide it is?” Because in a race this important, the second-order consequences could matter just as much as the first.
