Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) – Meaning and Scope What is a Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE)? The answer is simple. A PPE is a tangible asset that possesses two essential characteristics: 1. It is held for use The asset is acquired to be used in the business and not for resale. 2. Its useful life exceeds 12 months After purchase, the asset is expected to be used for more than one year. Therefore: Property, Plant and Equipment are tangible assets that are held for use in the business and are expected to provide economic benefits for a period exceeding one year. What Does “Held for Use” Mean in Practice? The phrase held for use is extremely important. It means that the asset is purchased to support business operations rather than to be sold in the ordinary course of business.
