What is a Bank Reconciliation Statement (BRS)? A. A BRS is a statement prepared to reconcile the balance shown by the cash book (bank column) with the balance shown by the bank's passbook or statement, explaining the differences between the two. Q2. Why does the cash book balance differ from the passbook balance? A. Differences arise mainly due to timing differences (like unpresented or uncleared cheques), errors in the cash book, errors in the passbook, or entries made correctly in the passbook but not yet recorded in the cash book (such as bank charges or directly collected amounts). Q3. What is an unpresented cheque in BRS? A. An unpresented cheque is a cheque issued by the business and recorded in the cash book, but not yet presented to the bank for payment β so it doesn't appear in the passbook yet. This reduces the cash book balance while the passbook balance remains unaffected. Q4. When do you add and when do you deduct an item in BRS? A. If you start with the cash book balance and move to the passbook balance: items that increased the cash book balance but aren't yet in the passbook (like uncleared cheques deposited) are deducted, while items that decreased the cash book balance but aren't in the passbook (like unpresented cheques) are added. Q5. What is an Adjusted/Amended Cash Book? A. An Adjusted Cash Book is prepared by correcting errors made in the cash book itself and recording transactions that appear correctly in the passbook but were missed in the cash book (like bank charges or interest collected). Its balance is the one used for finalizing accounts, not the uncorrected cash book balance. Q6. What is a contra entry, and in which cash book does it appear? A. A contra entry is one where both the debit and credit aspects of a transaction appear within the cash book itself β such as cash deposited into the bank or cash withdrawn from the bank. It only occurs in a Triple/Three Column Cash Book (with Cash, Bank, and Discount columns). Q7. What is the Imprest System in Petty Cash Book? A. Under the Imprest System, the petty cashier is given a fixed sum (the "float") at the start of a period. At the end of the period, the amount spent is reimbursed so the petty cash balance is restored to the original fixed amount. Q8. Which documents are required to prepare a BRS? A. You need the bank column of the cash book and the bank passbook (bank statement). A previous year's balance sheet is not required for preparing a BRS. π Join Our CA/ CMA Foundation & Intermediate Classes π Modes: Face-to-Face (Kolkata), Live Online, Google Drive, and Pendrive π ππ‘πππ¬ππ©π©: / π ππ’π¬π’π: βπ ππ‘πππ¬ππ©π© ππ‘ππ§π§ππ₯: π πππ₯ππ π«ππ¦: π ππ§π¬πππ π«ππ¦: #CMAFoundation #FFCA #BankReconciliation #CMAFoundationDecember2026
