Does PPE Need to Generate Revenue? | Future Economic Benefits Explained | Ind AS 16 | Zero Revenue?
What is "Economic Benefit"? Economic benefit can arise in two ways: Generating Revenue Reducing Costs If an asset helps the business earn money or save money, it provides economic benefit. Revenue-Generating Asset Imagine a glass manufacturing plant costing ₹1,700 crore. The plant manufactures glass. The glass is sold. Sales generate revenue. This plant directly creates cash inflows and clearly qualifies as PPE. Cost-Saving / Supporting Asset Now consider another plant installed beside the factory. It treats hazardous chemical waste. It does not produce any product. It does not directly earn revenue. Does it qualify as PPE? Yes. Without this treatment plant: Environmental laws may be violated. Government penalties may be imposed. The main factory may be forced to shut down. Although the waste-treatment plant does not generate cash flows by itself, it enables the main manufacturing plant to continue generating cash flows. Therefore, it provides future economic benefits indirectly and is recognized as PPE. Another Example: Office Building A factory building manufactures products, but an office building does not. Yet the office building houses functions such as: Purchasing Sales Finance Administration HR Without these activities, business operations cannot run efficiently. Therefore, the office building supports revenue generation and provides future economic benefits indirectly. Hence, it is also recognized as PPE. Key Exam Point An asset need not generate revenue directly to qualify as PPE. If it helps other assets or operations generate cash flows, reduces costs, ensures compliance, or supports business activities, it can still provide future economic benefits and be recognized as Property, Plant & Equipment (PPE). #CAInter #CAStudents #AdvancedAccounting #IndAS16 #PropertyPlantAndEquipment #PPE #FutureEconomicBenefits #AccountingConcepts #AccountingMadeEasy #CAExamPreparation #CAInterMay2027 #CommerceStudents #AccountingClasses #FinanceEducation #StudyWithVikram #CharteredAccountancy #AccountingTutorial #EconomicBenefits #CostReduction #RevenueGeneration #LearningAccounting #ExamReady #ConceptClarity #CACoaching #AccountingTeacher
