International System: IAS and IFRS IAS (International Accounting Standards) were issued by the International Accounting Standards Committee. These are the older standards and are numbered from IAS 1 to IAS 41. IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) are issued by the International Accounting Standards Board. These started after 2001 and are numbered from IFRS 1 onwards. Both IAS and IFRS exist together. Even if the numbers are the same, the topics are different. For example, IAS 2 is about inventories, while IFRS 2 is about share-based payment. Internationally, this does not create confusion. Indian System: Ind AS India decided to adopt a single naming system: Ind AS (Indian Accounting Standards), issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. India did not want separate names like Ind IAS or Ind IFRS. The goal was to keep things simple and also allow easy comparison with IFRS. Numbering Strategy First, IAS standards were mapped directly: IAS 1 to IAS 41 became Ind AS 1 to Ind AS 41. Second, IFRS standards were mapped with a change: IFRS 1 onwards were converted by adding 100 to the number. So: IFRS 1 became Ind AS 101 IFRS 2 became Ind AS 102 … IFRS 16 became Ind AS 116 What about numbers 42 to 100? Nothing is missing. There were never any standards with those numbers. India intentionally left a gap between 41 and 101 to clearly separate IAS-based standards from IFRS-based standards. Final takeaway IAS maps directly to Ind AS with the same numbering. IFRS maps to Ind AS by adding 100. There are no missing standards; it is just a numbering design choice. #IAS #IFRS #IndAS #AccountingStandards #CAFinal #FinancialReporting #ICAI #AccountingConcepts #CommerceStudents #StudyNotes #ExamPrep #AccountingBasics #IndASNumbering #IFRSmapping #IASvsIFRS
